I know I'm replying to a 2013 post, but I did produce an Anki deck for this game. However, as Darrell has a copyright on the kanji descriptions, not sure if it can be distributed.

Also, I kinda want to talk to the maker of this game. He seems like a really interesting guy based on the sense of humor he uses in his explanations for the kanji.

Does anyone know if the game uses the updated Joyo kanji set? I've noticed it sometimes teaches ones that Jisho lists as not Joyo kanji, and the front page says the game has "nearly 2000" kanji while the Joyo set has 2128. If not, does anyone have suggestions for learning the remaining kanji?

I am running into a bit of an issue at times because the kana list that the game is using is about fifty years out of date.

O.o

I spent a long while in Japan, and I assure you that there are two kana in the game that effectively don't exist any more unless you are reading pre-world war era books... And even then...

:P Once I looked up a chart that had them I was ok, but wi and wi and we do not exist on most kana charts, and do not really exist in modern Japanese. ^^;

So, people who are not total beginners are actually at a disadvantage in this game, and people who are total beginners are learning information that they may have to unlearn if they want to be effective with the language.

Hmm, no, there are no spells at all.
When you try to buy a spell, the salesman even tells you not to be silly because magic does not exist, even though he does offer a spell. You can just never get it.

So who else is playing レイトン教授と逆転裁判? Totally worth the cost. :D

I also played 極限脱出:ゼンニンシボウです。 Very, very , very good.

Time Travelers was pretty good, but had too many slow parts IMO. The last half of the game was definitely better. I have to say I might go back and make some crazy choices and see what happens, though.

Thanks for the recommendations JorritL. I actually started learning Japanese because i got Gigant Battle 2 for the NDS and even though it was a fighting game i wanted to understand the little details.
Then for some reason i ended up getting addicted to learning this language, It makes me feel productive and it's a skill few people have in the west, so it's pretty awesome.

@MinusSeven:
Having a Grand Line would require epic battles with wacky boss-level monsters.
I would definitely see how this could take the shape of a quiz-battle, like in for instance "Typing of the Dead" at the bottom of a cave or the top of a tower.
While this would sure be fun, this would require a large amount of work, which is probably not the first priority of Darrell right now. Remember that this is a one-man project...

@Manjisu:
Be sure to check out the non-hentai/ ecchi titles as well, there are some hidden gems, like the NDS title: 蟲師:天降る里 (Mushishi: amefuru sato)
Most of the kanji in that game are not that hard.
Another title is クレイモア 銀眼の魔女 (NDS), which has some fantasy-type kanji, but the rest of them are not that hard. I didn't really care much for the gameplay in that one.

Yes, the progress made, especially when it comes to the other game modes, is impressive.
I had hoped that he would partner with someone else or even to Open Source the engine (and keep the language files strictly for paying customers) to make the workload lighter on himself, but until now he has been quite stubborn on that matter. Being stubborn can be a boon in some cases. I'm thankful for the excellent learning aid that he has provided. I do have a lot of improvement suggestions.

Either way, he has posted updates to Twitter as recently as June and has updated things around the site as recently as July, so it's not like he's fallen off the map.
I want to say this project has been going for almost ten years now (I think that's about how long I've been following it), and it's normal for there to be a big batch of updates followed by months of relative silence.

It's all good, and I do enjoy the tiny Christmas feeling ^^

When I did vocab on SFA, I think it only had like 250 words. That wasn't nearly enough. And I only got to about 1300 on the kanji. It definitely helped, but it wasn't enough on its own.

I think I started reading the easiest manga (Yotsuba&) around 500-1000 words, and it was tough. But the more I read, the easier it got. The first volume took me *forever*. Seriously, it was like 30 minutes per page. The second volume was faster, and by the 4th and 5th volumes, it felt pretty good. Then I moved up to One Piece and other easy (but harder than Yotsuba&) mangas, and it was all hard again. I keep increasing the level gradually and now I'm reading games, wikis, light novels, etc.

iKnow is what I use for vocab, and it says I'm at 2800 words known. This is probably not accurate because there are a lot of words I skipped (I already knew them!) and probably a lot of words I've forgotten because I never found them in a book. (I don't do reviews on there. Reading is my review.)

Thanks for mentioning that sfa has 3000 words now. I should reinstall it and use it to help train my reading. It didn't have that feature last time I used it.

From what it says in the website the game has around 2000 kanji and 3000 words.

@Manjitsu - It's awesome. Seriously. I buy games now and play them and don't need to wait for the translation. I go to the wiki pages and read through them for tips and to help explain what's going on, in case I miss anything. I read books, and comics, and watch anime.

And I'm nowhere close to fluent. I can barely hold a conversation, but reading and listening are quite a bit easier, if you have studied enough vocabulary.

Just keep at it, and you'll get there, too.

Know of any potentially big updates coming in the future? From the main page it seems like Darrell wants to finish the story and perhaps integrate some of the supplementary material into the main game somehow.

I mean, I've got my hands full with what the game already has to offer, I can't wait until I'm completely familiar with the kanji and their primary readings, and the extra vocab stuff seems pretty cool as well, but I'm wondering if there's perhaps big goals on the horizon to look forward to as well. I mean, the story is entertaining and all, but it's really a means to an end, y'know.

I always forget this part, I've given the smith the ore, wood and rock he needs to make the axe. He said he'd get to work on it right away, in the mean time I am to gather as much silver ore as I can. What is the name of the rock for silver ore again? Am I remembering correctly that it is a super-rare drop and you only get it after about a thousand slimes?

Hey Darrell,

That new spiral island is pretty nifty, I like the new graphics for the cave. Is there no way to get back to the island with the ghost king on it after I've saved the princess? Whenever I sail I either get to my starting island, the nyan cat one, the arc one I'm supposed to go to next, or the spiral one, will I return to the ghost king later? So far I haven't noticed any bugs but I'll let you know as soon as I see one.

Because of a bug, and it's always きぞう.

And concerning the different readings, the annoying thing is that there's now way to tell which is which when it's just showing you 寄贈 for your reviews.

For what it's worth, according to EDICT きぞう is more common too...

Not that it matters, I never actually speak Japanese anyway ^^'

They're not really eating dog in Japan, but it's not a typo, either.
The kanji for utensil is 器.
If you blow it up, it has the kanji 大 right in the center of it, which looks kind of like the kanji for dog (犬).
He's trying to help you remember the kanji, by having you picture little square-shaped people gathered around the dog, eating it with utensils.
I guess it's better than having them eating the "big" guy 大 that's really in the center of it.

I probably wouldn't really want to eat a dog, but I thought the mnemonic was good, and never had trouble remembering that kanji thanks to it.

Oddly enough, I came back on my own. I started to think about getting serious about the last 1/3 of the kanji that I never memorized with SFA. Learning that first 2/3 was really helpful, but I think I've forgotten most of them and it's getting hard to memorize a lot of the new words I'm getting in my studies... Maybe if you follow some Japanese people on Twitter you can practice reading lots of short little things like that ^^

Is this from someone you know? It seems like a follow-up to a prior conversation.
どうすれば良いのですか? They want to know what you think they should do.
チェックをつけているのにおかしいのですが Even though they attached a check (?), something is weird?

チェック is the English word "check", so maybe that gives you some hints. (Maybe it's referring to "checking into something" instead of writing someone a check. Or "check" like plaid cloth pattern? XD)

I'm listening to "ordermade" by Radwimps now ^^;

It's a really pretty song... it's funny how it suddenly gets heavier about five minutes in.

My favourite Japanese band (after X-Japan of course) is Schwarz Stein, an electronic duo produced by Mana.

Togii - Well, I'm more of an old person actually making myself known. xD

SFA - I'm surprised you recognize him from the picture. =] I <3 his music. It's wonderful. My favorites are Jibun Kakumei and Are you Ready to Rock, but I like all his stuff. I actually went by Miyabi when I lived in Japan. It was mostly my host mom making a joke about how much I loved Miyavi, but no one else knew that. xD

Wilon - That's hilarious.

I've tried it on a few different browsers before. It works on Firefox, and as I said I can download the webpages and open them in Word Viewer...Sadly, it doesn't work in IE or Chrome. And I'm kind of a Chrome fan these days.

Anyways, yeah, the IME was the first thing I tried. I even installed the language pack directly from the Microsoft site. It said it worked, but I still can't see the characters.

The game already has more kanji than the 1945 in the old 常用漢字 list, so maybe it has some of the more common ones already (I guess a lot of them are radicals that aren't officially on the list, though).
I had beat the game to 1960 or whatever it stopped at at the time, once, but I never really made a list of the kanji that appeared or paid much attention to exactly which kanji I was being exposed to, so I don't really know XD

...surely it's on his list, though ^^

When I was learning my kana, I mostly used this game, but every so often I'd Google a random kana flashcard/quiz type site and do a game or two. Using different resources helps get it into your brain, and picking a different one off Google each time would really give you that random edge you're looking for.
This game really shines when you get to the kanji, though ^^

The characters initially show up grouped together by their appearance. (As opposed to a lot of resources that send them out in an アイウエオ type order).
Ones like シ ツ ン ソ look so alike that they're hard to keep separate sometimes, so it introduces them together so you can compare and find the differences.
Over time, the ones you get right most often will stop showing up so much, and the ones you miss will keep coming back for review until you've mastered them, so in that sense they will get mixed up.

Howdy, got a quick question for y'all. Is there a way to change the order of appearance of hiragana and katakana? I only recently bought the game, dealing mainly with the demo for a few weeks, but I'm worried I'm recognizing them less by symbol and more by order of appearance. Or after a while playing will the order just jumble itself. Apologies if this is something I could have determined by bumbling through menus for a bit, and thanks

-3,000 example words
-# of grammar entries?
-# of special readings?
-am I missing something else?

You don't have to learn the new definitions. If you can type the old definitions, then you recognize the kanji just fine.

The old keywords weren't wrong, I just had minor reasons to change them, such as not using the same preferred keyword for two kanji.

Don't worry about it. The English keywords are, at best, hints at what each kanji can mean in some contexts. The important thing is to recognize each kanji as a distinct and familiar symbol, so you can start to associate it with its readings and the words it's used in.

Request for Feature:
there are a number of Kanji whose translation has changed a little from previous versions (samurai->knight, think->plump, generation->society,...) and the game currently accepts the old translations, although it does show the new translation inbetween. The problem is that I hardly ever see these kanji again (since I got the old translation correct), so by the time they are reviewed, I've forgotten that there is a new translation and enter the old one again. So, would it be possible to add a setting to disallow old definitions. Otherwise I'll never learn the new ones...

BTW, I just met the first word-readings in the caves, and that looks great to me. I want to finish re-learning the kanji first, but I'm sure I'll enjoy the other modes immensely after that. Thanks for the fantastic work!
